Feb 16, 2008 AIG Insurance complaint by ERIOS505 |

During the record snowfall in 2006 here in Northern New Mexico, I was introduced to the standard procedure of how AIG shirks its responsibilities to its customers. My home located in Santa Fe, NM was damaged with over $5000 of interior damage due to snow loads exceeding 32" coupled with ice dams. AIG has stepped up to the plate and helped repair the interior, but now in their infinite wisdom and their highly trained adjusters have determined that the roof failed due to other issues related to workmanship or possibly maintenance. The record snow fall was apparantly not a factor! I suppose if you subscribe to this sort of insurance industry thinking, then pretty much the insurance industry can pick and choose which weather related disasters it will recognize. I guess this is what the people of New Orleans have been dealing with only at a national and catastrophic level. I have the upmost sympothy for these people and my personal experience with AIG through the Homesite Insurance company has been a tremendous disappointment. If I must shoulder the entire amount to repair my ailing roof the cost will be approximately $25,000! I will attempt to contact AIG for the third time and hopefully they will recognize not only last year's 50 year storm, but possibly offer the pay for some of the cost. Northern New Mexico was hit this year with the 100 year storm that has devastated Chama, NM and the reports cite over 7 feet of snow!

I have similar issue that happened last week. If there is a way that gives me peace of mind bu not haveing insurance especially form AIG (Homesite), I will be the first online. They always have a work around not cover your damage. I had a hail damage last year, while my freind's car who was parked on my drive way damaged, they told me that my roof has only a minimal damage. By the way all houses in my area got a new roof.

I have to admit, the comment below is pretty negative. But as a veteran of the Insurance profession, Its true. I will not divulge my company, but our advertising costs rival small countries GDP. Not to mention the new office we have - nice furniture too. We do lobby congress "hard" as you say, & we deny claims more & more each year. Im not quitting, I make a good money. The best advice I can give is get the cheapest policy you can if its required by law. If Insurance is not required, dont get it. Be smart in maintaining your property & be a defensive driver. Nobody reads these things, my commissions arent going to take a hit from this. most people are sheep. baa baa........get full coverage.

We are not in the business of paying out claims because you have an emergency. Insurance companies collects billions, perhaps trillions of dollars from people like you. We have huge overhead. Large state of the art metropolis buildings & TV commercials for every sporting event cost huge amounts of money. Where do you think we get that money? Insurance is really meant as sort of a Tax to you. We lobby congress hard. We enact legislation that makes it a law to carry our policies. We want more. If you think we are going to pay out, you are living in la la land. Profit, pure 100% profit, our overhead, & high wages for our extortioners is what we do. Dont file claims agian, loser. Pay us, shut up & pay more for your own repairs.

Unless there was a cave-in, how would snow damage a roof? Cause and effect - the adjusters are correct, and there is no ins. co. that would buy you a new roof. Homeowners insurance is not meant to pay for maintenance. If your roof needs maintenance to keep this from happening again, that is your responsibility.
